MEA reacts to DOGE's $21 million USAID fund claim: 'Deeply troubling'

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has expressed deep concern over recent claims by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a $21 million fund from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) aimed at influencing voter turnout in India. President Trump suggested that these funds were intended to interfere in India's electoral process, describing the allocation as a "kickback scheme." In response, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that such information is "deeply troubling" and that relevant Indian authorities are investigating the matter to address concerns about potential foreign interference in India's internal affairs.

This controversy has ignited a political dispute between India's major parties. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleges that the funds were used to support "deep-state assets" within the country, while the Congress party criticizes the government for purportedly allowing foreign funds to influence India's democratic processes.

The situation underscores the sensitivity surrounding foreign involvement in national elections and the importance of transparency in international aid allocations.
